Isn’t it Ironic?

Irony is on my list of favorite words for the week.  According to Wikipedia it comes from the Greek word, eirōneía, meaning dissimulation, feigned ignorance.
Encyclopedia Britannica says it comes from a Greek comic character named Eiron, “a clever underdog who by his wit repeatedly triumphs over the boastful character Alazon.”

Alanis Morissette says it’s the black fly in your chardonnay.
Speaking of Alanis, did you know that she has a twin brother named Wade, who is an accomplished musician and yogi?  An Epic Rap Battle between Alanis and Wade would be fun. Ironic even.

If you’ve never seen Epic Rap Battles of History, here’s my favorite, Shakespeare Vs Dr. Seuss
Have a great weekend!

Irony has a touch of humor. Sarcasm is irony on steroids.

It takes a sophisticated mind to fully grasp the beauty of irony. And Shakespeare vs. Dr. Suess is one for the ages.

Oh Irony, it makes me smile.

A very good rap battle choice madame. My favorite is a toss up between Picasso vs. Bob Ross and Miley vs. Joan of Arc.

You have a list of favourite words for the week? For every week? You are an ambitious soul. Enjoyed Dr. Seuss and Shakespeare duelling even though my tolerance for rap is rather low 🙂

Ironic…..I try to use it once a week, easier when I was working. “It's ironic you think that's true” “So you think the earth was created 7,000 years ago. Ironic”, etc
Nice etiology of the word, thanks.

I think it's ironic that many use ironic incorrectly (not saying you do).

I've never seen those videos before. That was hysterical. Thanks. And my current favorite word is “conundrum.”

Hi kmkat. A friend of mine used to say, “sarcasm is the lowest form of wit”. Usually after i said something sarcastic.

Hi Shelly-isn't it? Many of the others in the series are a little too raw, but this one I love.

Hi Ashes-I watched the Miley and Joan of Arc one. I can't even seem to get comfortable with someone pretending to be Miley. It just grosses me out for some reason.

Hi Jenny_o. No, I don't have a new one for every week. What I have a long running list of words in my head that I add to here and again. It's all very loosey goosey. Some rap I don't mind but I don't think a steady diet of it is something I would enjoy

Hi Jane-I think this one is the best of the lot but I also enjoy the Chuck Norris one. Conundrum….I find them anywhere. They follow me like puppies.

Hi AC. My stepmom, a retired teacher, always uses the word “ironical” and it drove me insane, although I would never correct her. But then one day, I said to myself, “The woman is a teacher, for God's sake, it probably is a word.” And sure enough, it is a valid, if old-fashioned, form.

So Wikipedia uses the phrase “feigned ignorance” …I not sure that ignorance is usually feigned. Isn't it more often just apparent?

The Shakespeare vs. Seuss is really quite funny. I have never seen that before.

Cheryl-I feign ignorance all the time. Someone in my family asks, “Where's my _______” and I answer, “I don't know where your ______ is. Where did you use it last?” even though I know exactly where their _________ is.
