I’m not sure if this post is about a fridge with a camera or about how I’m jealous of the millennials

I’ve been noticing a commercial lately;  a woman-she might be famous but I’m not sure-is constructing some kind of fruit masterpiece, and some guy who may or may not be her husband calls from the grocery store  and asks if they have eggs. She’s busy scooping watermelon, so she asks him to look.  He goes to his smart phone and he looks for the eggs.  I think they have them but I’m not sure because even after seeing this commercial about 20 times, I’m still not sure what’s going on and towards the end I always get distracted.  Is this a commercial for a fridge?  A smart phone?  Eggs?  The famous girl with the cute husband? Sometimes I see commercials and I visualise a bunch of clever people sitting around brainstorming, shooting baskets at a hoop attached to the office door, drinking shots, and trying to outdo each other.  Sure, the commercial is funny, but if I can’t figure out what they are selling, or even if I can but I can’t remember anything but the punchline, haven’t they just wasted millions of dollars?  Then again, I’m guessing I’m not the target audience these days.  To every thing there is a season.  Turn. Turn.  Whatever. Back to that commercial, though, seriously, is it about a fridge with a camera?  Do we need that?

I’m reminded of a joke I heard as a kid: Customs agent sees a guy riding a bicycle across the border for years. Repeatedly checks it; no contraband. After retiring, agent runs into the guy by chance and asks, “Just out of curiosity now, what WERE you smuggling?” Guy answers, “Bicycles!”

Perhaps your commercial is selling commercials?

Ha. I think you might be right. You’d think there would be some numbers involved somewhere, some accountability for this commercial business. I enjoy the commercials but I never buy anything. Well, that’s not true. I’m a sucker for passive aggressive advertising. Here’s this great product we’re not advertising.

I have a love-hate relationship with commercials. Well, I used to, when I watched TV, which is rare these days. Anyway, there are some commercials I love and I could watch them over and over. (And that’s usually how they’re played, so that’s okay.) And others are so mind-numbing I want to poke hot sticks in my eyes. I appreciate a well-crafted commercial or print ad like I appreciate a good joke or story, but it will not make me buy anything. And about that fridge – why did the guy call his wife about eggs if he could have just checked his phone? That’s a hole in the plot bit enough to drive an 18-wheeler through, don’t you think?? Bah!

Jenny, you remind me so much of my friend, GG, that it makes me laugh sometimes. That comment could have come straight from her. Personally, I think she could have put down her melon scooper for 1 minute to look in the fridge and if that ad is about a fridge with a camera, well, I’m just scratching my head because, really, why? Who thought that would be useful?

I went Googling for that ad but couldn’t find it, but did find other ads for fridges with cameras in them, so apparently they are a thing now. I used to deliver fridges back in the ’90s, and TV sets also, and these fridges look like a combination of the two with some camera and computer thrown in. I guess the idea would be to check the contents of your fridge while shopping (in case you’re grocery list impaired) but hopefully semi-privately so no other shoppers can see the stuff in the corner growing mold…

Hi Doug-I found a blurb about it: http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/kristen-bell-dax-shepard-kill-you-cuteness-their-latest-samsung-ads-164856 I haven’t read it yet, but hopefully all will be explained. If my fridge has to have a camera, I’d rather have it focused on the inside than the outside. I don’t need a visual record of how many times I visit the fridge during the day. I am capable of checking the fridge before I go to the grocery store, though, so I think I’ll just skip the whole camera thing altogether.

OK, I found it on YouTube, and you’re absolutely right: WTF are they selling? They don’t mention any products or features and appeared to be relying on the audience knowing (and caring about) who the actors are to convey any information at all. Oh yeah “family hub” is mentioned in text at the end… I guess they are counting on people being curious enough to Google that?

Ha. Oh, guess I missed that family hub part…Now me, I like the appliance commercials starring Kelly Ripa. I know who she is, she’s funny, and those appliances are to die for. Although. I couldn’t tell you what the brand is if my life depended on it. GE, AMANA, WHIRLPOOL? Wonder if Family Hub knows. I don’t really care. Pretty sure I can’t afford that magic oven anyway.
